A year ago I would not have guessed how in love I would be today.
A year ago I could not have known that such feelings were even possible.
A year ago I had just started getting to know you.
Oh to think of a year from now and all that is yet to be known!
I love you - every day, for every year of the rest of our lives.

10/30 Spare Some Change?

Can you spare some change?

I shake my head, "No, sorry," with a weak smile, thinking of the few bills and coins I have stashed in my wallet.  I make it a point to not give money, usually.  When I have the time I offer to buy some food.  I aspire to have something substantial and ready to hand to those who ask - a pair of socks stuffed with some filling snack foods and some personal essentials like a toothbrush or deodorant.

But, like most people I think, when I hear "Spare some change" I think of dollars and cents.

That happened today and I continued on, thinking nothing of it.  Until BAM - a thought that struck to the very core of my heart: What about change?

Do you have something to change my life?
To change my day?
To change my moment?
Can you spare some part of your self to change a part of my own story?

And YES.  YES.

I have so much change within me.  My heart cries out for change in our society - to house the homeless, feed the hungry, to help the hurting.  To give love.

And in that moment, my heart heard the call for that kind of change, layered beneath my own prejudices and expectations brought about by living in a world where I have never truly been in need.

The world needs change.  I have the means to do something about it.

Can you spare some change?

[Side note that the sock idea is one that has come about recently and I really, really want to pursue it.  Shall continue working out the details.]

Autumn

the Storm has blown Autumn
into the Souls of my Bones;
Cold and Color, Rain and Wind
are rooting into my very Marrow.

Red and Golden
my Heart lies open,
like the Leaves clinging to Limbs --
ready for Change.

Steady

Set down onto rocky, parched earth,
My limbs stay spring-loaded
Ready to leap from a desert-place of discomfort.
Change has charged my fortifications,
Shaken and stirred up storms of worry.

I have to ride out the squalls,
To let myself feel the ripping seams of what was known,
To cry out for the old,
To breathe in the stinging, fresh air,
To grow anew.

But in spite of raging tempests
Blown in on shifting winds,
I am steady.
I am rooted to the earth
In knowing the depth of your love.

5/28/15 Friendship

I'm eternally grateful for the amazing friends in my life.  I am lucky to have people who are willing to move all of my crap down four flights of stairs for some mimosas, donuts, and strawberries, who are willing to wait patiently when most things don't go according to plan, who text and call me incessantly when wonderful things happen in my life, who insist on taking pictures, who get me out and about exploring the world around me, and who always, always, always make me laugh.  Times of change are difficult but they are also when the truest parts of friendship are depended upon, revealed, and celebrated.  Love to you all.

Change

Unceasing rhythm
An inevitable force
Constant in inconstancy
True to its nature

Paper Heart

Someone wrote all over
My paper heart
And when they didn't want it back
I took it out myself
And clipped a new one
Out of fresh white printer paper
It's crisp and light
And flutters in the wind
Waiting for the next someone
To come along.

I promise, this is nothing more than a little idea that's been floating in my head (and fading on my "idea whiteboard") for a while.  Tonight was the night.  :)

Of all the known things

Of all the known things
In this wide old world
The one thing I know
Is that life always has
Is now
And will keep on
Changing

Change

What if I could just wish myself into becoming a new person?  she wondered.  Leave this old self behind entirely and start over as someone else.

It was a bleakly cold end to New Years Day.  The setting sun cast a dim rainbow of color into the dusky sky, silhouetting the western mountains.  A faint glimmer caught her eye - the evening star.

Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight...

She smirked.  Wishes and stars.  How many times had she pleaded on those cold distant pinpricks and they had come through?

Just that once...  No.  She shook the thought from her head, running numbed hands through her tangled brown hair.  The bite of the air pricked her skin and her breath was beginning to materialize in thin white wisps - it was time to head in.  But she felt suspended in the growing twilight as the memories rushed back.

In their eighth summer, her next door neighbor Laney had insisted that three friends were better than two, so they created Jenna.  With curly blonde hair and sky blue eyes, Jenna was the prettiest, most popular, and nicest girl anyone ever met, even if no one else knew it.

No, it was a coincidence, pure and simple.  Imaginary friends don't appear out of thin air and real friends don't vanish without a trace.

Jenna was their favorite secret - the third fairy, the third witch, the third New World explorer, the third musketeer.  That was, until one day when Laney announced that Jenna told her that she only wanted to speak to her.  Suddenly Jenna always seemed to agree with Laney about everything, especially on the fact that two friends were better than three.  Remembering running home in tears that August afternoon still smarted.

That night she had looked out of her bedroom window at the stars and wished with all her might on the brightest one she could see.  I wish Jenna was my best friend and Laney was imaginary and then we could leave her out and she would be sad and alone for ever and ever.

The next day, Laney was gone.
